Sonoma County Repertory Theater
Presents
Dead Man’s Cell Phone

By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Sharon Winegar

Sebastopol, CA – February 15, 2010 “A ringing phone demands to be answered” in the captivating comedy, Dead Man’s Cell Phone by esteemed playwright Sarah Ruhl. Since 2003, Ruhl has quickly gained widespread recognition throughout the theater community and beyond. She is known as the playwright who creates “vivid adventurous theatrical works that poignantly juxtapose the mundane aspects of daily life with mythic themes of love and war” according to the announcement of her MacArthur Fellowship Award in 2006.  In addition to the MacArthur Fellowship, she has won numerous awards including the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the Helen Merrill Emerging Playwrights Award, the Whiting Writers' Award, a nomination for a Pulitzer Prize and just this year, she won the Will Glickman Award, which awards the best play to have its world premiere in the San Francisco Bay Area.

With such local ties and monumental success, the Sonoma County Repertory Theater is proud to produce the North Bay premiere of Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Dead Man's Cell Phone had its world premiere at Washington D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in 2007 before going to New York City, where it opened at Playwrights Horizons in 2008 in a production starring Mary-Louise Parker. It was recently produced at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2009.

Synopsis: After confiscating a cell phone from a stranger (Gordon) in a café, Jean begins to discover the mysteries of life, death and the varieties of love life can offer. Dead Man’s Cell Phone analyzes the mundane and the metaphysical, the blunt and the obscure, the patently bizarre and the bizarrely moving.

"Satire is her oxygen. . . . In her new oddball comedy, Dead Man's Cell Phone, Sarah Ruhl is forever vital in her lyrical and biting takes on how we behave."
-The Washington Post

"Ruhl's zany probe of the razor-thin line between life and death delivers a fresh and humorous look at the times we live in."
-Variety
